And then there are the ones who just don’t give a hoot about anyone’s feelings. They’re cheeky, they’re bold, and they have little-to-no filter when it comes to slinging words. One certain famous intellectual once said: “Facts don’t care about your feelings”. Well, the same goes for these blunt and audacious characters. So here’s our ranking of the sassiest anime characters who you’d probably want in your friend circle, but wouldn’t want to get in an argument with.
10. Hitagi Senjougahara
Anime: Monogatari Series To those who’ve already watched the show, it’s no secret that the Monogatari Series is a weird, complex, and hilarious anime all at the same time. Not to mention that each of its characters all have a certain uniqueness (understatement of the year) to them – which I guess is what attracted most of us fans in the first place. To name one of these bizarre characters, we have Senjougahara, who has absolutely no filter when it comes to talking with others. Especially in the name of love. She’s willing to call out any other girls that Araragi talks to, or even feuds with, although she’s also not beyond throwing a few verbal jabs at her boyfriend as well.
9. Sakura Haruno
Anime: Naruto It’s a well-known fact that many anime fans don’t like Sakura as a character, or her actions (or lack thereof) in the series. But in my humble opinion, she still held her own considering who her teammates were. Now, we have to understand that being a third wheel to the most well-known rivals in anime is a very difficult job. But Sakura definitely delivered to some capacity. And what made Sakura even more fascinating for me is that her bold character was already well established from the earlier episodes of the anime. Remember those “Inner Sakura” monologues she used to have? Those were the days…
8. Satoru Gojou
Anime: Jujutsu Kaisen Satoru Gojou is an insanely strong sorcerer who just doesn’t give a flying frick about what his seniors think or say. Hell, even Cursed Spirits aren’t safe from the harsh verbal assaults that he occasionally dishes out. On that note, R.I.P to our boy Jogo. He never did recover from being called weak to his face, did he? Whether Gojou does it intentionally or not (most of the time he obviously does), his careless attitude towards his fellow sorcerers also gets him into trouble once in a while. Well, it’s not like he even cares… and that’s just what I like about him. You do you, Gojou.
7. Kagura
Anime: Gintama Don’t be fooled by her appearance. This “ultra-hot” China girl is one of the most violent women in anime – in addition to being one of the most hilarious. She’s perfectly balanced, I’d say. Armed with a sharp tongue and a blatantly direct attitude, she serves as one of the show’s main leads alongside Gintoki and Shinpachi. She’s also very unladylike (in her younger years at least) and confrontational — often getting into arguments with her friends and even strangers for the slightest things. Though I have to say, these traits of hers don’t take anything away from the fact that she’s the perfect third member of the famous trio. Simply hysterical, all three of them are.
6. Tatsumaki
Anime: One Punch Man Strong anime characters are more often than not very outspoken and rude. And the “Tornado of Terror” is no exception to this rule. Despite her short stature, Tatsumaki gets her kicks acting all high-and-mighty and condescending to her fellow heroes, and even towards the staff of the Hero Association. Unsurprisingly, this goes double for Saitama – who once suffered such a vicious roasting from Tatsumaki that he needed Genos to respond on his behalf. Well, we all know how great that turned out for Genos.
5. Saiki Kusuo
Anime: The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. What is it with psychics and their verbal savagery? Much like Tatsumaki, Saiki is also amazingly cheeky in a way that’s different from his fellow esper. Although he doesn’t say his opinions out loud, his inner voice is always quick with a quip and a callout whenever someone around him messes up or does something strange. And considering he’s in one of the funniest anime series of all time, he was given a lot of characters to make fun of in the show. Much to his annoyance, and to our enjoyment.
4. Chloe Cerise
Anime: Pokémon Pokémon might be an anime that’s geared towards kids, but it certainly didn’t stop Chloe from being the bonafide Sass Queen of the series. She’s more often than not the voice of reason when she’s with Ash and Goh. And to her credit, she does a pretty good job reining them in with her hilarious quips and one-liners. And honestly, we all know Ash is exactly the type of reckless and stubborn kid who needs some reigning in every once in a while. Actually, maybe more than “once in a while” now that I think about it.
3. Aqua
Anime: KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on this Wonderful World! Whether you like her or not, Aqua holds the title of being the funniest goddess in all of anime. That’s one more title than Eris has (in my book anyway), so Aqua might just be the superior goddess after all! Her comedy chops aside, a part of Aqua’s charm is that she holds nothing back whenever she speaks, with her being a proud goddess and all. Kazuma had to find that out the hard way after he died, as he was sent in front of Aqua who insulted him right off the bat — grilling him about the way he lived and died. But unfortunately for Aqua, Kazuma would have his revenge, and would eventually give back as good as he took – making their frequent back and forths very fun to watch.
2. Haruhi Suzumiya
Anime: The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya If you’re the literal goddess of your own universe, then I guess it’s fair to say you have a free pass to do whatever the hell you want. Haruhi Suzumiya is the strongest character on this list, as she can basically create and delete entire universes to her liking. And even though she doesn’t know she’s a god at first, her arrogant and bold attitude still shows in the way she conducts herself around others. What makes her perfect for this sassy list is that she’s impulsive, egotistical, and blunt. So much so that she won’t even hesitate to call out other characters, even when she’s the one who’s in the wrong. Hmm, talk about being stubborn.
1. Asuka Langley Sohryu
Anime: Neon Genesis Evangelion At the top of our ranking, we have arguably the “best girl” of the entire NGA series. Countless wars have been waged online regarding this particular topic, as every single romantic interest that Shinji could end up with are all equally tempting choices. But in Asuka’s defense, she does have something that most of her competitors do not. I’m talking about her sassiness levels being so dangerously high, of course. In fact, a huge part of the reason why fans like Asuka is because of her spontaneity – and her somewhat abrasive approach when it comes to socializing with others. Simply put, she’s stubborn. And sometimes even offensive beyond reason — yet these are things we can’t really fault her for, considering the misfortunes she went through in her past.
