However, certain people really hammer down the crazy part and become overprotective of their loved ones. God knows that anime features quite a wide array of love struck/crazy characters, but which ones are the most out-there? Let’s dive into some of these overprotective characters and see what makes them tick.
15. Koro-Sensei
Anime: Assassination Classroom Given Koro-Sensei’s background, it makes perfect sense that he values his students more than life itself. And this doesn’t come out just when they’re in danger or something like that. In fact, it’s his everyday demeanor that showcases how deeply he cares for his students. He pushes himself to the limit to prepare his students for everything and anything that life may throw their way, to the point of writing entire books just so that they won’t get lost in a new city. He’s one of the rare cases where it strictly comes off as adorable – but I could see it being too much for some people.
14. Albedo
Anime: Overlord Albedo didn’t have much say in this matter, as she was literally programed to love Ainz with all of her heart. And let’s just say that programs don’t tend to have a lot of nuances when you give them a demand like that. I have no doubt in my mind that Albedo would rather eat her own limbs than even slightly inconvenience Ainz, and every female within a 100 foot radius of him is in grave danger. She’s extremely possessive and jealous, to the point that I’m surprised she hasn’t suffocated Ainz by accident from clinging on so hard.
13. Shion
Anime: That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Shion falls under the same category as Albedo in my mind – but I decided to put her higher, as she became obsessed by choice, and not because of a program. Everyone in the village idolizes Rimuru like a god. But Shion takes the cake in my opinion, as she would even go as far as to disobey orders from Rimuru if it meant that she couldn’t be close to them. Like, she is 100% more comfortable with a mission possibly failing, than the idea that Rimuru might go out on their own and get hurt – or god forbid falling in love with someone.
12. Mototsugu Shirahama
Anime: Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple Mototsugu is just adorable in his own overprotective way. It isn’t like he dotes on his son every second of the day. But if you dare insult his boy, be prepared to taste some led. Even the smallest provocation can make this man turn to his shotgun. And I just found that so hilariously relatable. He’s the type of dude that you fear as a teacher because you would never dare to give his son/daughter anything short of an A++. Violence usually isn’t the answer, but for some reason this dude just makes it work.
11. Togame
Anime: Katanagatari Here’s a pick that’s somewhat debatable if we look at the very ending of the show. But let’s not focus on that. In terms of danger, Togame can’t really protect Shichika in any meaningful way. He’s her sword, after all. However, when it comes to outright jealousy and possessiveness, she’s on her A game. Even when she’s the one who forces Shichika to train with a woman, she’s pulling her hair out the entire time at the mere thought that the two might hit it off. She also uses her brilliant mind to its upmost degree to ensure that Shichika can be as safe as possible during any major fight.
10. Ruijerd Supardia
Anime: Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation This one is a little different, as love is nowhere to be found in the equation. Rather, Ruijerd really wants to better the image of his people. This leads to a very overprotective mentality when it comes to escorting our two protagonists, as he’s prepared to murder anyone who can be any kind of threat. That might sound normal here, since our protagonists are children. But you also have to keep in mind that one of them is a master swordsman, and the other has S-class magic. So it’s not like they really need protection.
9. Hestia
Anime: Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? And we’re right back to the lovey-dovey stuff. Hestia is pretty extreme when it comes to the lengths she’ll go to in order to protect Bell. Even though he’s a seasoned warrior, she will still lock him out of a fight, fully prepared to die herself, just because she couldn’t stomach the chance of him getting seriously hurt. Jealousy is not far behind either, as she’s prepared to do just about anything to make sure that Bell stays with her (and just her) for the rest of his life.
8. Subaru Natsuki
Anime: Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- Subaru is generally very protective when it comes to the main cast, but man does his simp power level skyrocket whenever Emilia is involved. The dude literally took the beating of his life just because someone dared to talk badly about her. And whenever she runs into some turmoil, he’s prepared to off himself countless times just for the slim chance that he would be capable of making everything alright in the end. I have no doubt that if Emilia ever fell in love with a different man, Subaru would either lose his mind or become a full-time murderer.
7. Maes Hughes
Anime: Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood Maes is like the Eminem of anime, as he’ll end your career if you mention his daughter. It might sound like an over exaggeration. But he did pull out a gun on a bunch of three year olds, so nothing is out of line for this man. And even though that last line might make him sound scary, he’s the most wholesome and loving husband/father that a person could ask for. It’s obvious that he loves his daughter more than anything else in the world, so it’s only natural for him to also destroy anyone and anything that might be a threat.
6. Mikasa Ackerman
Anime: Attack on Titan It’s no stretch to say that Mikasa lives exclusively for Eren, as the final season would even confirm to some extent. It doesn’t matter what kind of trouble Eren is in, Mikasa will somehow break through and rescue her dear childhood friend. Others needed an entire character arc to get over the fact that they’re supposed to kill people now. And Mikasa was just like “they touched Eren so that’s the only logical outcome”. Like seriously, she has no chill whatsoever. And her passion somehow made her a bigger threat than a literal Titan-shifter.
5. Kumagorou Saiki
Anime: The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. I never truly realized what a hilarious combination the words “tsundere” and “grandpa” are until I watched this show. Kumagorou is probably the biggest tsundere ever, as he constantly acts like a cold and disinterested person, while also loving his daughter and grandchildren to death. We even saw a scene where he took all the money he had and went god knows where to deliver ransom money for Kusuo – even though he knew it was a prank call. But just on the slim possibility that it was real… And don’t even get me started on the comedic goldmine that is his hatred for his son-in-law. That stuff never gets old.
4. Dale
Anime: If It’s for My Daughter, I’d Even Defeat a Demon Lord Considering that even the title of the show tells you what a passionate father Dale is, you can kind of see why he’s so high up on this list. The best part is the fact that it isn’t even his biological daughter, but rather a troubled little girl that he adopted. And yes, he absolutely will defeat a demon lord if it means keeping her out of harm’s way. Even when there’s no danger, Dale imagines threats and defeats them just so that he can be 100% sure that his little angel is alright.
3. Yuno Gasai
Anime: Mirai Nikki Yandere characters are a crazy bunch as it is. But even among them, Yuno stands out. Calling her obsessed would be putting it lightly, as she’s the type to kill her boyfriend’s mother just in case that Freud was correct after all. She’ll murder just about anyone that tries to harm Yuki or get in between them, and would probably kill herself if it meant saving her darling. It takes her a really long time to loosen up and recognize that Yuki can protect himself, and even then, she felt overbearing.
2. Sousuke Sagara
Anime: Full Metal Panic! You just can’t help but feel for this dude. Being that war has been such a big part of his life, the amount of trauma he has on his back is simply ridiculous. This has led him to become quite overprotective, as he didn’t want to lose any more friends in this world. He’s always quick to pull out a gun or blow something up when his loved ones are threatened, and it takes him a long time to trust a newcomer amongst his ranks. But once he trusts you, you’re set for life.
1. Revy
Anime: Black Lagoon I wanted to put Revy at the number one spot here, not because she’s the most extreme out of these characters, but rather because she’s the most believable. Just like Sousuke, she’s plagued by a very violent past and severe trauma that initially makes her incapable of getting close to people. In fact, she antagonizes and argues with Rock quite frequently in the first part of the series. But once she understood that he meant her no harm and that he’s just looking out for her, she became very protective. She’ll literally beat you to death if you happen to lay a finger on Rock – and she doesn’t take too kindly to anyone preoccupying his attention, either.
