But sometimes, we get traits that make a character totally and obnoxiously loud. Yes, there are definitely more than a handful of protagonists and supporting characters that make it their life’s mission to be heard above everyone else, literally. There’s not a moment’s peace to be found within this article, trust me! So we’re using this list to dedicate some time to a handful of anime men, women, and children who rise above normal decibel levels. Bring your earplugs, as we’re starting with…
1. Asta
Anime: Black Clover Asta got off to a rocky start with fans for two reasons. The first and fully understandable reason is that at least, to begin with, he was just another shonen hero with very little to separate him from the rest. The second (and possibly more fully understandable) reason was that one of the few things he had going for him was that he just wouldn’t. stop. shouting. And while his character has grown leaps and bounds from his introduction on his quest to become the Wizard King, he still has the occasional moment where we’re reminded just how far he’s come – normally when he’s yelling in some poor strangers face about something.
2. Yuri Plisetsky
Anime: Yuri!!! On Ice Russian anime characters are at a bit of a premium. So Yuri!!! On Ice is unique in having quite so many of them. However, none of them quite match the volume of Yuri Plisetsky. It seems to be his solution to everything. Being ignored? Shout at the person ignoring you. Feeling like you’re being treated like a child? Have a good yell at the person treating you like a child! Even in his very first scene, we’re introduced to the foul-mouthed skater with him kicking down a bathroom door and screaming full volume. It’s a pure case of “start as you mean to go on”.
3. Tilestone
Anime: One Piece Most characters on this list will occasionally stop yelling to do something serious, or eat, or sleep. Tilestone has no such qualms – and will continue shouting literally every single word that he says. It’s honestly part of the reason I love the character so much – it doesn’t matter what the situation is or how much delicateness is called for, Tilestone will never stop yelling at the top of his lungs – as if the person he’s talking to is half the world away. His long-suffering foreman friends have tried everything, from forcibly relocating him to just putting up with him. However, nobody seems to have a way to turn his volume down – and I like it that way!
4. Katsuki Bakugo
Anime: My Hero Academia I think it would be remiss of anyone to think a character whose Hero name translates to “Great Explosion Murder God Dynamight” would ever be quiet at any point. However, his aggressiveness and loudness have actually become almost a mascot for the rest of his class at U.A. High School. Think of it like him being the world’s most in-your-face cheerleader. And while his explosive powers only add to the volume that Katsuki operates at on a minute-to-minute basis, it’s nice to know there are characters who are appreciated in-show for just how ear-splitting they are.
5. Superbia Squalo
Anime: Katekyo Hitman Reborn Anyone who has seen this fantastic anime no doubt has the word “VOI!” permanently etched into their brain. That’s all thanks to Squalo, the assassin Sword Emperor who yells it about as frequently as he kills people. Which is, quite frankly, a lot. Granted, Squalo is a bit of an odd case. If being an assassin for hire wasn’t interesting enough, he also cut off his own hand and had it replaced with a sword to make his job easier. So for this entry, I’m willing to let him be as loud as he wants. I don’t exactly want to cross him.
6. Zenitsu Agatsuma
Anime: Demon Slayer There’s more than a handful of characters I could have chosen from Demon Slayer who fit the criteria for this list. But none of them are so loud, so often, as Zenitsu. What’s more strange about Zenitsu is that, for all intents and purposes, he’s a bit of a coward. Not someone you would normally expect to be bringing the house down every time he speaks. But he uses that cowardice as a force to drive him forward and become stronger than ever. And while that means in the world of the show he’s a formidable force, the viewing audience sometimes has to turn down the TV to hear themselves think.
7. Chi-Chi
Anime: Dragon Ball Given that her competition in Dragon Ball is a bunch of aliens who absolutely love shouting things, you might think Chi-Chi is an odd choice. However, a lot of Chi-Chi’s loudness in the show comes from her depiction as a stereotypical nagging housewife to her husband Goku. Along with this, she’s seen pitching almost absurd moments of rage, to the point she’s putting off power waves like any Super Saiyan. So while the outbursts of her husband and his race might be the loudest in any given moment, I don’t think anyone is consistently as loud for quite as often as she is!
8. Hanamichi Sakuragi
Anime: Slam Dunk While most sports anime are a gold mine for loud characters, I’ve picked Hanamichi in particular for his notable loudness. Even in a genre known for people shouting at each other. That’s some feat! Hanamichi can’t go five minutes without loudly bragging about his skills and accomplishments. Skills and accomplishments he simply doesn’t have, as his understanding of even the basic rules of basketball are non-existent. So he overcompensates with aggressive yelling until he actually learns the rules. At which point, he just keeps on doing it. You can’t win with some people.
9. Edward Elric
Anime: Fullmetal Alchemist Edward may have traits that set him apart from the normal protagonist in the shonen groove, but he retains one very specific one: He’s about as loud as it gets. It’s always about such little things too – I think if you bumped into him in the street your ears would be ringing for weeks afterwards. And telling him his magic skills aren’t up to scratch? Forget about it. In a world full of characters that literally dwarf him in size, Edward knows how to make himself heard. And I mean that in the most literal sense possible.
10. Tasuki
Anime: Fushigi Yuugi: The Mysterious Play As the Fifth Suzaku warrior, Tasuki is no stranger to taking up a sword to protect the ones he loves. He’s also no stranger to giving everyone in a fifty-foot radius an ear-bashing they’ll never forget! It’s his fiery temperament that means his volume often rises high enough to make a librarian run out of fingers to shush with. However, that temperament also makes him an incredible warrior, so it might just balance out! And while his exterior often masks his loyal and brave demeanor, he’s a character that could be relied on to the ends of the earth if needs be. Just be sure to stay on his good side. Or at least fifty feet away when he talks.
11. Taiga Aisaka
Anime: Toradora! You don’t get a nickname like “Palmtop Tiger” without a backstory, and for Taiga Aisaka it’s a moniker that her persistent, brash nature more than earns. While she might be one of the smallest characters in the show (and heaven help you if you tease her about it), she reacts to issues with an aggressiveness that would make hardened warriors shake in their boots. Her best friend and her crush might get to escape the frankly crazy amount of noise that such a little person can make. But anyone who crosses her – or even those unlucky enough to be in the wrong place at the wrong time – might find themselves with sore ears very quickly.
12. Sakura
Anime: Naruto You’d think I might have picked Naruto from this series, given his typical shonen tendencies of being louder than a jet engine in a metal bucket. However, the surprising volume comes from Sakura – both internally and externally. Her inner monologue, known as Inner Sakura, reflects all the negative emotions she feels, rather than putting them outwards. So while the other characters may only occasionally hear just how loud she can be, we get to see Sakura in all her ear-splitting glory time and time again.
