We know that many people have a big connection with their fandoms, so it’s not surprising that fans want to see channel crossover – yet video games that get turned into movies have had a divided past, with the 1993 Super Mario Bros and the long line of Resident Evil films. Though more people are agreeing that Hollywood is getting it right, with hits like the Detective Pikachu movie featuring one of Canada’s most successful exports, Ryan Reynolds, and the Sonic the Hedgehog Movie that blessed us with another Jim Carrey appearance after four years away from the big screen. Here at FandomSpot we surveyed 2,000 of our community members to find out what games you actually want movie adaptations of, and here’s what we found. The top 10 game series you want turned into films:
1. The Legend of Zelda
Starting off at the top spot is the elf who holds the title for most people not knowing his real name (for info, its ‘Link’, Zelda is the princess he saves) despite over 30 years of existence and selling over 52 million copies across original titles, remakes and ports. With the game series being a household name amongst even the most casual gamers, it’s no surprise that the massive following would want to see a film adaptation.
2. Grand Theft Auto
As one of the best-selling video game franchises of all time, GTA contains all the key components of an action-packed blockbuster from guns, explosions, car chases, and more. And while we wait for GTA 6, a film would help fill the gap after nine years since the last installment.
3. Horizon: Zero Dawn
Set in a dystopian future where nature meets technology and where robot dinosaurs roam a jungle-overgrown America, Horizon: Zero Dawn sets the scene for a perfect survival sci-fi film about the remaining tribes of humanity surviving this mystical unknown world.
4. God of War
The God of War series only gets more popular with each installment – and is in the perfect position to make the jump from video game to the big screen. With the success of films like Marvel’s Thor about the Norse god, and TV shows like Spartacus and Game of Thrones, the God of War series has the potential to explore mythologies from across the world.
5. Hollow Knight
Similar to A Bug’s Life and James and the Giant Peach, this movie adaptation might take a zoomed-in look into the insects’ world, following an unnamed protagonist who must explore the world he has found himself in and save the kingdom of Hallownest.
6. Animal Crossing
As one of the highest-selling games during the pandemic, there’s no surprise that people want to see this in movie form. Animal Crossing is set in a world filled with exploration, and the many friendships you make with the characters in the game.
7. Final Fantasy
With each game being unique and following its own story, a live-action Final Fantasy film’s storyline might follow expected formats in the game but with a fresh take. Similar to Spider-Man: No Way Home it could pay homage to those that came before, having callbacks and references to the video games.
8. Fallout
Fallout would offer a post-apocalyptic survival movie in a world filled with what’s left of humanity, and what has grown from the radioactive world left behind.
9. Super Mario
With a massive archive of games spanning genres like platforming, racing, and sports, any new Super Mario movie could go anywhere. And with the 1993 movie’s negative reception, a remake (done right) would go down well.
10. Red Dead Redemption
A modern take on the classic Western style would make a great RDR film that could take so many angles, like an origin story for the characters, a sequel carrying on the story, or even a retold version looking at the greatest moments of the Red Dead series.
