The animation group Oddfellows originally posted an overview of the project, with concept art and animation stills, on its website before removing the page shortly after. However, it’s still available thanks to Google Cache, and most of the images are hosted on Imgur now.
The overview says The Last of Us animation would have carved out a unique style for itself separate from the game, and the goal was using a series of flashbacks to cover key moments from the first game. This would have brought viewers up to speed for the second game and re-told important plot points in a unique new way.
The post reads:
Why Sony decided not to proceed isn’t clear, especially since making games into films and shows is one of its priorities moving forward.
Ultimately Sony decided not to move forward with this project.
Whether this is the last we hear of it or something else pops up down the line remains to be seen. Either way, The Last of Us Part 2 launches on PlayStation 4 on May 29.
